She has studied and worked in China, Japan and Argentina. Among her translations are works by Mo Yan, Liu Cixin, Jin Yong, Chi Zijian, Sanmao, Liao Yiwu, Wang Xiaobo, Can Xue and classical and modern Chinese poetry. Her work has earned her several awards, such as the Schlegel Professorship on the Poetics of Translation at Free University Berlin 2021, and most recently the Helmut-M.-Braem Translation Award 2024 and the Special Book Award of China 2024. She is currently working on the German translation of Taiwan Travelogue (臺灣漫遊錄) by Yang Shuang Zi (楊双子).      場次 1  翻譯再現殖民歷史——《臺灣漫遊錄》作者楊双子、德文譯者白嘉琳對談 Translation as translation of colonial history – Talk with Yang Shuang Zi About Translating Her Novel Taiwan Travelogue Taiwan Travelogue, published in 2020, is a novel that comes disguised as a translation of a rediscovered Japanese record of a voyage through Taiwan 1938, by a Japanese novelist called Chizuko. Along with a Taiwanese woman of the same name as hers, who serves as her interpreter and is an exceptional cook, she discovers the island and its delicacies and the limits of love in an environment of colonial hierarchies. It's a novel about colonial history, identity, food... and about translation itself. This work has already been translated to several languages. Karin Betz currently works on the German translation and will discuss the difficulties of translating a novel that is actually multi-lingual (Chinese, Japanese and Tâi-gí) and other tricky issues with the author Yang Shuang Zi. Many people consider poetry as "untranslatable". But once we can name what exactly it is that we assume untranslatable, we've already started to think about the solution. First, we will take a look at Eliot Weinberger's famous essay 19 Ways of Looking At Wang Wei and pick out some examples to discuss them. We will also collect ideas on how to translate "cultural keywords" (like 道 / dao etc.). After that, participants can choose between works by a contemporary Taiwanese poet and a contemporary English poet and translate them to their native languages in several groups (depending on number and languages of participants). The aim is to discover fun and creativity in translation. After that, translation solutions will be read and discussed.      提醒   本活動將以英語進行(提供華語口譯)  提醒   The activity will be conducted mainly in English.
